Ben Kiernan on the Wall of Silence: The Field of Genocide Studies and the Guatemalan Genocide

Published on October 17, 2017 by Editor

Professor Ben Kiernan, Professor of History and Professor of International and Area Studies and Director of the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University, a distinguished genocide scholar, has granted permission to republish the following article on the website of the Institute on the Holocaust and Genocide in Jerusalem:

Kiernan, Ben (2016 ).  Wall of Silence: The Field of Genocide Studies and the Guatemalan Genocide. Chapter (in English) in Brandal, Nik, and Thorsen, Dag Einar (Eds.). Publisher (in Norway) Oslo: Dryers Forlag, pp.169-198. Click here to read the chapter.

The article is focused specifically on genocide in Guatemala, which is obviously an important subject in its own right, but it is also turned by the author into a platform for looking at some of the early history of genocide studies and for looking at the basic guidelines of US policy about the genocides of other peoples.

Ben Kiernan is the author of several books including Blood and Soil: A World History of Genocide and Extermination from Sparta to Darfur. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2007.
